Moving a piano is not like moving a wardrobe. A standard upright piano weighs between 200 and 500 kilograms, its internal mechanism is delicate, and its lacquered surface scratches if a single corner catches a door frame. What Piano Moving Actually Involves

Before anything moves, the piano is wrapped in protective blankets and secured with strapping. The pedal lyre and lid are protected separately. On staircases we use specialist piano dollies with straps, adjusting our technique to the width and pitch of each flight. For grand pianos the legs and lyre are removed first, and the body is transported on a dedicated tipping board. Once the piano is in its new home, we reassemble everything and recommend scheduling a tuning two to four weeks later, once the instrument has settled in its new environment.

Crane Lifts Through Windows

Many of Prague's older apartment buildings have staircases too narrow for a piano – even with the best equipment. In those cases we organise a crane lift through a window or balcony. We handle all coordination: crane hire, traffic management if needed, and a crew of at least three technicians. It sounds dramatic, but it is routine for us.

How to Prepare

1. Clear the route – remove rugs, mats, and small furniture from the path through both properties
2. Let your building manager know if the lift or a parking space needs to be reserved
3. Prepare the destination spot – the floor must be level and able to bear the load
4. Book a piano tuner for two to four weeks after the move
