Carpet Cleaning: DIY Methods vs. Professional Approach

Carpet Cleaning: DIY Methods vs. Professional Approach — Complete Comparison

Carpet is one of the most stressed surfaces in a household — it captures eight times more dust than hard floors, absorbs odours and moisture, and is home to millions of microorganisms. Regular vacuuming removes surface dirt, but deeply embedded dust, allergens, and bacteria remain. In this article, we compare DIY and professional carpet cleaning methods so you can make an informed decision.

Why Carpet Is a "Dirt Magnet"

Carpet traps airborne dust particles — paradoxically an advantage, as these particles are no longer floating in the air. The problem arises when carpet is not cleaned often enough. After 2 years without deep cleaning, 1 m² of carpet can contain up to 100,000 dust mites.

DIY Carpet Cleaning Methods

Baking soda — refresh and light stains: Sprinkle evenly, leave 30–60 minutes, vacuum thoroughly. Absorbs moisture, neutralises odours, and helps loosen light surface stains. Repeat monthly.

Vinegar and water — natural cleaner: White vinegar and water (1:1) in a spray bottle. Spray on stain, leave 10–15 minutes, vacuum. Do not use on wool or silk carpets — acid can damage fibres.

Foam cleaners from shops: Apply foam per instructions, let dry, vacuum. Advantage: accessibility. Disadvantage: chemical residues can attract more dirt.

Home steam cleaner: Hot steam loosens dirt and disinfects. Risk: if carpet is not properly dried after steam cleaning, mould can develop.

Professional Hot Water Extraction

This method is considered the most effective deep carpet cleaning and is recommended by most carpet manufacturers. A special machine injects hot water with cleaning solution deep into carpet fibres under high pressure, then immediately extracts it back — along with all dissolved dirt, allergens, mites, and bacteria. Result: carpet clean to its core, no chemical residue.

When DIY Is Enough vs. When to Call Professionals

DIY is enough when: no visible stains, no allergy sufferers, no pets, carpet is relatively new. Regular vacuuming twice weekly plus monthly baking soda keeps it in good condition.

Professional cleaning needed when: visible stains that DIY cannot remove, carpet odour persists, allergy sufferers at home, pets, not deep-cleaned for over 12 months, before or after moving.
