Sofa Dry Cleaning: When and Why You Should Call Professionals

Why Your Sofa Is Dirtier Than You Think

The sofa is the centrepiece of every living room — and simultaneously the dirtiest piece of furniture in the entire household. Research shows that an average sofa after two years of use contains more bacteria than a toilet seat. The reason is simple: we clean the toilet regularly, but the sofa almost never. Yet we spend hours on it daily — sitting, eating, relaxing, sleeping, cuddling with pets. Every day, sweat, skin cells, food crumbs, dust mites, and allergens work their way into the upholstery.

5 Clear Signs Your Sofa Needs Professional Cleaning

  • Visible stains — coffee, wine, food, or pet stains that cannot be removed with regular products. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove — so do not delay.
  • Unpleasant odour — even after airing, you notice a musty smell, sweat, or pet odour from the sofa. Regular air fresheners only mask the problem.
  • Allergic reactions — sneezing, itchy skin, red eyes when sitting on the sofa. Dust mites, pollen, and other allergens accumulate in the upholstery.
  • Over a year since last cleaning — even if the sofa looks clean, an enormous amount of grime builds up inside over a year.
  • Pets — your dog or cat regularly lies on the sofa. Animal hair, saliva, and outdoor contaminants penetrate deep into the fabric.

How Professional Extraction Cleaning Works

At BeeClean, we use hot water extraction, considered the most effective method for upholstery cleaning. The process:

1. Inspection and material test — every upholstery is different. Before cleaning, we check the fabric type and test the cleaning agent on an inconspicuous spot.

2. Pre-cleaning and vacuuming — we first vacuum all loose debris with an industrial vacuum, then apply a pre-treatment agent to break down settled grime.

3. Extraction cleaning — a special machine injects a solution of hot water and cleaning agent under pressure into the upholstery and immediately extracts it back — along with all dissolved dirt, allergens, and bacteria.

4. Stain treatment — stubborn stains are treated with specialised spotting agents targeted at specific contamination types (grease, wine, paint, blood).

5. Final check and drying — after completion, we verify the result and leave the sofa to dry. Drying time is 4–6 hours depending on material and ventilation.

DIY Cleaning vs. Professional — Comparison

Home methods (baking soda, vinegar, foam cleaners from shops) can help with surface stains but have limitations. They cannot penetrate deep into the upholstery where mites and bacteria live. Moreover, incorrectly used products can damage upholstery or leave residues that attract more dirt. Professional extraction cleaning removes grime from depth and leaves no residues.

How Often to Clean Your Sofa

We recommend professional cleaning once every 12–18 months for a regular household. With pets, small children, or allergy sufferers, every 6–9 months. Between professional sessions, regularly vacuum the upholstery and immediately treat fresh stains.

How Much Does Professional Sofa Cleaning Cost
