Mattress Cleaning: What You Do Not Know About What You Sleep On
You spend approximately one-third of your life on a mattress — about 8 hours daily, 56 hours weekly, 2,920 hours annually. During that time, your body produces litres of sweat, kilograms of dead skin cells, and incredible amounts of moisture. An average mattress after two years of use contains up to 2 million dust mites and their excrement — the primary cause of household allergies. Yet most people never clean their mattress.
What Lives in Your Mattress
Dust mites — microscopic arachnids that feed on dead human skin. One gram of mattress dust can contain thousands of mites. Their droppings are the main trigger for dust allergies — sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin eczema.
Bacteria — sweat and body fluids create a moist environment ideal for bacterial growth. Staphylococcus, E. coli, and moulds are common inhabitants of unmaintained mattresses.
Mould — moisture from sweat and insufficient ventilation can lead to mould growth inside the mattress, releasing spores into the air.
How Often to Clean a Mattress
We recommend professional cleaning once or twice a year. Ideally in spring and autumn — just like a full apartment deep clean. Between sessions: vacuum the surface monthly, change bedding weekly, rotate the mattress every 3 months, keep bedroom humidity below 50% and temperature around 18–20°C.
Home Mattress Care
Between professional sessions, treat your mattress with baking soda: sprinkle a thin layer on the surface, leave for 30 minutes, and vacuum thoroughly. For fresh stains: blot immediately with paper towel (do not press), then treat with a mild detergent and cold water solution. Never use hot water on blood or protein stains.
Professional Mattress Cleaning from BeeClean
Our professional cleaning uses hot water extraction: a special solution is injected deep into the mattress, dissolving dirt, allergens, and bacteria. It is then extracted back along with water. Result: a mattress clean to its core, no chemical residue, no odour.
Price: single mattress from 690 CZK, double from 990 CZK. Cleaning time: 20–30 minutes. Drying: 4–6 hours. Book online or via our pricing page.
When to Replace Your Mattress Entirely
Even regular cleaning cannot extend mattress life indefinitely. General recommendation: replace every 7–10 years. Replace sooner if: odour persists after professional cleaning, visible sagging exists, you wake with back pain, or allergy symptoms persist after cleaning.
