Spring Window Cleaning: Why It Matters and How to Do It Professionally

After winter, windows are covered with a layer of dust, salt deposits from de-icing compounds, and other grime. Spring sunshine mercilessly reveals every smear and streak you could not see in winter dimness. When Is the Ideal Time for Spring Window Cleaning?

The best period is March to April, when frost is no longer a risk but it is not too hot yet. Hot weather causes cleaning solution to dry quickly on the glass, leaving streaks. Ideal conditions: overcast or partly cloudy, 10–20°C, no wind. Never wash windows in direct sunlight — the result will disappoint you.

What You Will Need

• Bucket of warm water with a drop of dish soap (not too much — suds leave streaks)
• Professional squeegee — an investment of about 200 CZK that changes the entire result
• Applicator or sponge on a pole
• Microfibre cloth for edge finishing
• Dry cloth for sills and frames
• For stubborn grime: vinegar and water solution (1:1) or special glass cleaner

Professional Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Frames and sills — always start with frames and sills, not the glass. Wipe them with a damp cloth, remove dust and debris from grooves.

Step 2: Wetting the glass — apply cleaning solution to the entire glass surface using an applicator. Work systematically, top to bottom, in even strips.

Step 3: Squeegee — this is the key step. Start in the top corner and pull the squeegee horizontally or vertically in one smooth motion. Wipe the rubber after each pass. Overlap strokes by 1–2 cm to prevent streaks.

Step 4: Finishing — wipe edges and drips with a microfibre cloth. Check the glass at an angle — streaks are only visible against the light.

Box-Frame Windows — A Special Challenge

In Prague's historic buildings (especially in Prague 1, Prague 2, and Letná), box-frame windows with two rows of glass are common. Cleaning them is significantly more demanding — both wings must be opened, inner and outer panes cleaned, the space between them cleared, and wooden frames treated. Expect double the time compared to standard windows.
