Home Disinfection After Illness: How to Rid Your Apartment of Bacteria and Viruses
After a flu, Covid, or other infectious illness in the family, thorough home disinfection is essential. Viruses and bacteria survive on surfaces for hours to days — stainless steel up to 48 hours, plastic up to 72 hours, textiles up to 24 hours. Proper disinfection prevents reinfection.
What to Disinfect First
Most-touched surfaces: door handles, light switches, remote controls, phones, keyboards, taps, fridge and microwave handles, toilet flush. Disinfect daily for 3–5 days after symptoms subside.
How to Disinfect Properly
Use products with min. 70% alcohol or disinfecting wipes. Alternative: bleach solution (4 teaspoons per litre). Product must remain on surface 30 seconds to 1 minute to kill pathogens.
Textiles and Laundry
Wash bedding, towels, and patient's clothes at minimum 60°C. Vacuum and spray mattress with disinfectant. Wash pillows and duvets at 60°C.
Air Quality
Ventilate intensively — minimum 4 times daily, 10-minute cross-ventilation. Consider an air purifier with HEPA filter during illness.
